Third in the complete-list series: Mystery of the Fossils, known overseas as Japanese Fossil. It brought the fossil Pokémon Omanyte, Kabuto and Aerodactyl, the three legendary birds, and the first Mew ever pulled from a booster.

What is it?

  • Released on 21 June 1997 as Expansion Pack vol. 3.
  • 48 cards: 43 Pokémon and 5 Trainers (Energy Search, Gambler, Mysterious Fossil, Recycle, Mr. Fuji).
  • 16 holos, and every rare is a holo: Muk, Moltres, Lapras, Articuno, Raichu, Magneton, Zapdos, Haunter, Gengar, Hypno, Mew, Hitmonlee, Kabutops, Aerodactyl, Ditto and Dragonite.
  • Mysterious Fossil is a Trainer played like a Pokémon; Omanyte and Kabuto evolve from it. A mechanic unique to the early game.
  • Cards are unnumbered; this site orders them by Pokédex number.

Highlights

  • Mew is the face of the set: the first booster-pack card of the mythical Pokémon missing from Base Set. Its PSA 10 ranks among the most expensive old-back cards overall.
  • Dragonite, Gengar and Aerodactyl are artwork favourites and staples for overseas collectors.
  • Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno are often collected as a trio, so their prices move together.
  • Raichu and Magneton also appear in Base Set, but with different artwork. Their price pages here are separate from the Base Set versions.
