Japanese Neo Destiny (2001): all 113 cards with PSA prices — eight Shining Pokémon and the last old-back set

Tenth in the complete-list series: Neo vol. 4, “Darkness, and to Light…”, known overseas as Japanese Neo Destiny. It is the last old-back booster expansion. Dark and Light Pokémon appear side by side, and the set holds eight Shining Pokémon, which makes it a fitting close to the old-back era.

What is it?

• Released on 20 April 2001. The Japanese name is neo 第4弾 闇、そして光へ… It is the final old-back booster expansion.
• 113 cards, one of the largest old-back sets: 98 Pokémon, 14 Trainers and 1 Energy.
• Of the 98 Pokémon, 26 are Dark (わるい), 20 are Light (やさしい) and 8 are Shining (ひかる). Some species get both: Wigglytuff exists as Light Wigglytuff and Dark Wigglytuff.
• Eight Shining Pokémon, all holo: Shining Celebi, Shining Charizard, Shining Raichu, Shining Mewtwo, Shining Kabutops, Shining Tyranitar, Shining Steelix and Shining Noctowl.
• 24 holos. The eight Shining cards, plus Dark Crobat, Light Arcanine, Dark Typhlosion, Dark Houndoom, Dark Feraligatr, Light Azumarill, Dark Ampharos, Dark Gengar, Dark Espeon, Dark Donphan, Dark Tyranitar, Dark Scizor, Light Dragonite, Light Togetic, Dark Porygon2, and one Energy, Miracle Energy.
• Twelve Unown forms are included: C, G, H, L, P, Q, S, T, V, W, X and Z.
• The 14 Trainers include Mail from Bill, EXP. ALL, Radio Tower, Impostor Oak’s Invention and Team Rocket’s Evil Deeds.
• Cards are unnumbered; Pokémon are ordered by Pokédex number.

Highlights

• Shining Charizard is the face of the set and one of the most expensive old-back cards of all. With Shining Mewtwo and Shining Celebi it is the most sought-after of the eight Shining cards.
• Dark Gengar has the largest PSA population in the set and is the standout among the Dark holos.
• Dark Espeon is second by graded count; some collectors pair it with the Neo Discovery Espeon.
• Light Dragonite and Light Arcanine are the two popular Light Pokémon, third and fourth by graded count.
• Dark Tyranitar and Dark Typhlosion complete the top six. Both are separate cards from their Shining and regular versions.

Reading the prices

• Shining Pokémon are graded less often than the Dark holos, and PSA 10s are scarcer still. With few sales the median moves easily, so check the date and source on the card’s price page.
• The Dark, Light, Shining and regular versions of one species are all separate cards here. Go by the exact name on the PSA label.
• PSA 10 / PSA 9 below are the median of the latest confirmed sales (up to five).
